This article offers reflections within the framework of applied linguistics, defined as a multidisciplinary approach aimed at resolving communication problems through linguistic analysis. It highlights the conceptual and terminological ambiguity surrounding the terms “smart city” and “mediation”, emphasizing the importance of clarifying their understanding for effective communication in scientific, political, and popular discourses. It analyzes definitions of these terms drawn from certain lexicographical and terminological repertoires as well as various specialized studies, aiming to elucidate the underlying concepts. It explores how the concept of mediation, broadly defined by Guillaume-Hofnung, can complement the vision of the smart city, thus promoting a more understandable and accessible urban communication and policy.
