Abstract

The article explores the knowledge and use of Cooperative Learning on the part of twenty-five Italian CLIL teachers involved in a classroom observation based research project, 'Participation in CLIL', which was carried out in the Veneto region by the Regional Institute for Educational Research of the Veneto (IRRE del Veneto, now National Agency for the Promotion of School Autonomy) in collaboration with the PRIN Project run by the University of Ca' Foscari, under the supervision of Prof. Carmel Mary Coonan. The author is involved in the project both as the IRRE researcher and as a PhD student at the Department of Language Sciences of the University. The project aimed at sustaining teachers in responding efficiently to innovation, rethinking their teaching practices in order to develop more learning-conducive activities in their CLIL lessons. The author's focus is on cooperative/collaborative learning activities, and specifically on how the interaction among students affects their understanding of the content and their production in the foreign language.
