Abstract

This paper explores the applicability of the notion of “realities of power” to the study of Roman history through the discussion of two case studies: Ronald Syme’s assessment of Asinius Pollio in The Roman Revolution, and recent debates on the use of the realist paradigm in the study of Roman imperialism.
