Abstract
This article presents 27 hitherto unpublished letters (1951-1977) sent by one of the foremost classicists of the 20th century, Harold F. Cherniss (1904-1987), to Mario Untersteiner (1899-1981). Such a a wide, complete, and chronologically extended collection of letters casts light on personal relationships inside the community of classical scholarship in the central decades of the 20th century, but also provides valuable clues on personality features, research and methodology. Moreover, Cherniss’ statements on U.S. internal politics gives a testimony on American history in these decades.
