La latinizzazione come specchio dei tempi. Il caso del Galateo

Abstract

The essay compares the three known Latin translations of Giovanni Della Casa’s Galateo, by Nathan Chytraeus, Nicholas Fitzherbert, and Ercole Francesco Dandini, highlighting the different translation strategies adopted. Furthermore, starting from the attribution to Fitzherbert of a previously anonymous letter reconstructing the sacrilege committed by the Englishman Walter Marsh in Rome in 1595, the impact of the contemporary spiritual debate on the Latinization of Fitzherbert’s Galateo is discussed.
