Modernity and national self-determination. Some interpretive proposals for a history of peripheral nationalism in Western Europe
Abstract
Attraverso una ricostruzione diacronica piuttosto sui generis l’articolo cerca di dimostrare quanto l’impatto dei processi di modernizzazione economica abbia condizionato l’evoluzione ideologica del nazionalismo politico a livello periferico. Concentrando l’analisi sul ruolo del nazionalismo basco e irlandese durante la Guerra Civile Spagnola, sul collaborazionismo filonazista di bretoni e fiamminghi, e sulla crescita elettorale dei partiti nazionalisti in Scozia e nelle Fiandre nel corso degli ultimi quarant’anni, si proverà a dimostrare come nelle regioni industrializzate e sindacalizzate, il nazionalismo abbia virato, almeno in buona parte, verso sinistra, mentre nei contesti rurali, o non industrializzati, abbia mantenuto spesso un carattere conservatore e/o reazionario.
The aim of this article is an analysis of the impact that economic factors have had on the political and ideological evolution of peripheral nationalist movements in twentieth-century Western Europe. Through the study of the role played by the Basque and the Irish nationalists within the Spanish Civil War, the pro-Nazi collaboration of Bretons and Flemings, and the evolution of Scottish and Flemish nationalisms in the last forty years, the article aims to show how nationalism in stateless nations seems to turn towards the left in the industrial and unionised areas, while it is conservative, when not reactionary and xenophobic, in the rural and non-industrialised regions.
