Differently oriented vectors of post-soviet historical evolution? Russia and Ukraine at the crossroads between nation-building and regional integration

Marco Puleri

Abstract

The recent crisis in Ukraine, which began in November 2013, has been considered a crucial turning point for the whole post-Soviet area, allegedly tracing a dividing line between two vectors of historical evolution.
In this contribution, through a reconstruction of the history of the international relations between Russia and Ukraine, and in the light of the most recent developments, some fundamental questions are posed: (a) what role was played by the different perspectives of regional integration and the respective processes of nation-building in the history of Russo-Ukrainian relations in the post-Soviet era? (b) Can we identify today the emergence of two diverging vectors of post-Soviet historical evolution? (c) If such is the case, what is the significance of this separation for the whole post-Soviet area?
