Abstract

This paper focuses on Puškin’s comment Notes to the Annals of Tacitus, which Puškin wrote in parallel with the drafting of the historical drama Boris Godunov. The Notes are to be considered a work placed halfway between the translation and paraphrase, through which the poet expresses his own interpretation of the Annals’ of Tacitus’ historical events, openly disputing with the Ancient Roman historian. Puškin’s comment had been kept hidden from the general public for long time and slightly considered by critics, nevertheless Notes to the Annals of Tacitus represents a key element to properly understand Puškin’s political vision. In fact, as is well known, the poet had with government authorities an ambiguous and controversial relationship.
