Abstract

MORPHOLOGY OF LARVAE AND PUPA OF Mastigus pilifer KRAATZ (Coleoptera, Scydmaenidae)

Morphology of each the three instar larvae of Mastigus pilifer is examined, and the description of the relative pupa is added.

The full-grown larvae sensibly differ from those of 1st and 2nd instars in colour, body shape and antennal segmentation. A glandular area on the head disc is well developed in 2nd and 3rd instar larvae, whereas there are only slight traces of it in the 1st instar.

The list of the general features of Scydmaenid larvae, presented by BROWN & CROWSON (1979), is revised in the light of what has been observed in Mastigus, and an attempt is made in this paper to include this genus in the key of the mentioned Authors.

Viene trattata la morfologia dei tre stadi larvali e della pupa di Mastigus pilifer Kraatz. Le larve presentano un cospicuo dimorfismo tra stadio e stadio, consistente, fra l'altro, nella comparsa di segmentazione secondaria del secondo antennomero nella larva matura e nella presenza di un particolare organo ghiandolare cefalico a partire dalla larva di II età.

Le caratteristiche generali delle larve degli Scidmenidi, stabilite da BROWN & CROWSON, vengono integrate per tener conto di quanto osservato nella specie in esame.
